Austin, Texas, November 6, 2007 ? On November 12, 1988, Mangia Pizza opened its doors in Austin at 17th and San Antonio Street. Nineteen years, five restaurants and over 20 awards later as the
?Best Pizza in Austin,? Mangia continues serving Austinites the best pizza in town.
A lot has happened since that November day in 1988, not only to Mangia but to Austin and the world. No internet back then, UT?s DKR Texas Memorial Stadium was simply Memorial Stadium, Liberty Lunch was still rocking downtown and no one locally had ever even heard of Leslie. Moving with Austin and Austinites into the 21st Century, Mangia now even offers its famous pizzas nationwide, via ecommerce shopping from it?s website and overnight shipping through FedEx. Mangia fans around the country are now able to go to the Mangia website, make a few clicks on their computer, and just like that, Mangia is on its way to their neck of the woods.
Mangia?s famous heart-shaped Pizza is still the greatest pizza phenomena in Austin history. Available all year around, Mangia sells literally thousands of heart-shaped pizzas on Valentine?s Day alone. Mangia also sports one the city?s most famous art icons, Mangiasaurus Rex, who for years has been living atop a rooftop somewhere on the Drag. Rex has had quite a life, having been knocked from his perch twice over the years, but each time he gets a helping hand from his friends in the Austin community and rises again.
In 2005, Mangia was named the ?National Independent Pizza Company of the Year,? by Pizza Today magazine. Mangia is the first and only Texas restaurant to receive this lofty industry honor. Another measure of success is Mangia?s national ranking this year as the 19th largest (based on revenue) independent pizza company in the U.S.
?Having been around for 19 years now, Mangia has become an Austin institution,? says co-owner John Kinnaird. ?Many UT alumnus come back to Austin to see a Longhorn game and the weekend wouldn?t be complete without a stop at Mangia to eat a Chicago stuffed pie. We bring back good memories of Austin and great tasting pizza.? continued next page?
We all know that Austin?s population has grown dramatically from 550,000 back in ?88, but so too has Mangia; now shepherding five full service restaurants, with four in Austin and one in Round Rock. Through a licensing agreement, Mangia has even landed a satellite location at Austin Bergstrom International Airport.
According to Mangia?s Founder Jeff Sayers, ?When I look back now on that first night we opened for business, I?m proud of what we?ve accomplished and grateful to the people of Austin ? and now Round Rock - for helping make us what we are today. For that reason, we continue to listen to our customers in order to make Mangia better and better as we move forward into our 20th year here in the Capitol City.?
